FLEX PCB / FLEX WIRING BOARD




Flex wiring boards are thin, lightweight PWB’s that can bend and conform to fit small spaces. A flexible pcb can provide many design opportunities for engineers, as they combine the capabilities of cables, wires, connectors and PWB’s into one compact solution. Aside from their design potential, flex wiring boards are beneficial because they reduce costs, and eliminate the space and weight limitations of a traditional rigid board.


TYPES OF PRINTED WIRING BOARDS
Rigid Circuit Boards can be single or multilayer and have the advantages of strength and stability. However, they are rigid which means they lack the design flexibility that flex and rigid flex pwb’s offer.
Single-Laye Flex Circuits have one conductive layer that is either covered with an insulating layer on one side, or sandwiched between two.
Double-Layer Flex Circuits consist of two conductive layers with an insulating layer in between. Plated through holes are used to connect the two conductive layers.
Multilayer-Flex Circuits are more complex and offer more design possibilities. They are similar to Double-Sided Flex Circuits, but consist of three or more conductive layers.
Rigid-Flex Circuits combine the stability of rigid circuit boards and the flexibility of flex circuit boards. They consist of two or more conductive layers with either flexible or rigid insulation in between.

EXTENDED LENGTH
Pioneer Circuits’ extended length flex presents great design possibilities to our customers. When designing a larger project, engineers often run into the problem of having to connect multiple pwbs and connecting them together through different means such as bulky ribbon cables. Rather than having many wiring boards, cables and connectors that are all potential points of failures.


MULTILAYER
Pioneer Circuits has the capability to manufacture multilayer extended length flex circuit boards that are over 10M in length. These extended length flex boards use custom splice interconnects and offer controlled impedance.


THERMAL-MANAGEMENT
Constantan is a nickel-copper alloy with thermo-characteristics that can be used in place of copper for applications such as infared imaging. Pioneer Circuits has extensive experience with manufacturing with constantan.
